Your Opponents Are Stacking. Now What?

Stacking looks complicated, but get past all the fancy movement and it actually telegraphs exactly where your opponents are going.

Know what to look for, and there are a few predictable weaknesses you can exploit over and over again.

When the serving team is stacking, hit your return toward the vacating side, or the side your opponent is leaving. And when in doubt, put it deep, low, and right down the middle.

It’s exceptionally hard to hit a clean drive or drop while your feet aren’t planted under your body. Force them to hit in transition and you should be able to pounce on the next ball.

A few other pointers for dismantling a stack:

  1. Track the ball, not the bodies. Stacking teams generate a lot of motion, and motion pulls eyes. Watch the ball and the movement stops mattering. This is the same discipline that keeps you from getting beaten by a poach.
  2. Make them hit a fifth shot. Stacks are built around winning the first four. Extend rallies with resets and smart shot selection and the pattern loses its shape.
  3. Test the non-forehand side twice early. If the team stacks to hide a backhand, you'll know by point four. If they're hiding nothing, you've lost two points learning something useful.

Just remember: Stacking is a tactic, not a magic bullet. Don’t let it lull you into bad decisions or trying shots you wouldn’t normally rely on. Exploit it when you can, but don’t let it dictate your own game.
